Once a year, BritWeek, the brainchild of 19 Entertainment President Nigel Lythgoe, organizes a program highlighting the rich connections between Britain and California. Its 2010 annual gala dinner will honor Sir Richard Branson of Virgin.

Yellow hot air balloonAnd guess who is the guest performer!? Of course, it’s “singing sensation” David Archuleta! He’ll be singing “Up, Up, and Away in my Beautiful Balloon” —maybe, probably not! But I can imagine it as the perfect song for Sir Branson; David’s voice would soar into the sky and the Earth-bound celebrity crowd would gaze heavenward. “Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon / If you’ll hold my hand we’ll chase your dream across the sky / For we can fly we can fly / Up, up and away / My beautiful, my beautiful balloon.”

The evening will feature many surprise guests, a performance by singing sensation David Archuleta, and a live auction that includes some once-in-a-lifetime travel packages. Proceeds from this evening will benefit two extraordinary charities: Save the Children and Virgin Unite.

I’ve been wondering who is responsible for the invite. Could it be (gasp!) Nigel Lythgoe? Actually, I’d prefer to think it was Richard Branson himself, but in either event I’m hopeful this will lead to future events in Great Britain based on Sir Branson’s recommendation.

I’m hoping David will have a good rapport with Branson too. Virgin Records, founded by him and sold to EMI in 1992, signed such artists as Genesis, The Sex Pistols, and The Rolling Stones. Then Branson started V2 Records and sold it to Universal. About the music biz, he said, “The music industry is a strange combination of having real and intangible assets: pop bands are brand names in themselves, and at a given stage in their careers their name alone can practically guarantee hit records.”

The name “David Archuleta” comes to mind.

The big question is what will David sing at Britweek gala!???
