Simon Cowell interview in TV Guide

Simon Cowell is pictured on the cover of the current edition of  TV Guide (May 4 – 10), and there is a long article featuring an interview with him.  I quickly skimmed the article since I’m not the least bit interested in Season 8 of American Idol, when my eyes fixed upon the following quotation in connection with Season 7’s finale:

“I thought David Archuleta walked the final last year.  Sitting in that theater, judging the audience, if I had a million dollars to bet, it would have all gone to David Archuleta.  We were literally gobsmacked that David Cook won.  I don’t care who wins, by the way, I just want it to feel like a competition.”

A couple of things struck me about what he said.  First of all, we all know he does care who wins, given how heavily he campaigned on Cook’s behalf prior to the final, and how his comments during the show were intended to fire up Cook’s fan base while lulling David’s into complacency.  Secondly, I have to think Cowell is eying David’s success both at home and internationally, and is positioning himself to appear as though he always thought it would happen.  When David reaches World Idol status, no doubt Simon will say it was only because he was too young he didn’t win, or something of that nature.  After all, Simon is never wrong!

“I Wanna Know You”

Neon Limelight put David Archuleta at number 3 on its list of Top 5 Male Vocalists of 2008. Gavin DeGraw and Ne-Yo were first and second, respectively. Of the Miley Cyrus and David Archuleta “duet”, Neon writes:

Uneven duets are a real drag. You know, the kind where one singer obviously owns the other vocally? Yeah… So unhot. I just knew that’d be the case when I heard that season 7 American Idol runner-up and one of Neon Limelight’s top five male vocalists of 2008 David Archuleta would be teaming up with Disney darling Miley Cyrus for a vocal match-up on Cyrus’s hit show Hannah Montana. Not that I’m completely anti-Miley’s voice, it’s just Miley and David? Embarrassment on the horizon!

Surprisingly, that wasn’t the case! Their duet, “I Wanna Know You,” debuted on Radio Disney yesterday in its entirety. The puppy-love song is a thousand percent catchy, and even though Archie clearly sings circles around Miss Montana, the pairing is pretty sweet!

I’ve read that David’s solo part was cut from the new release of “I Wanna Know You”. I hope it isn’t true, because when I heard David singing with Miley on “Hannah Montana”, his solo was the highlight and an important part of the song.

San Jose Concert Hopes & Dreams

The clean up crew is sweeping. A flyer blows by. A sadness creeps over the landscape. The road trip is over. The fans, still anxiously waiting outside in long lines, in hopes of getting a glimpse of their idols, have not given up hope yet. They don’t know it, but the busses are gone. Steadfastly, they cling to the idea of a picture. An autograph. A conversation. A moment. Something to take home with them. They want to remember this day. They want to have something to tell their kids when they’re old. After all, this has changed their lives for keeps. Not a fleeting thrill, but an inspiring event that they can keep in their hearts forever. Over flowing with idol love, they gather their dreams and try to hold on forever.
With tight anticipation they watch as the guard approaches. Then their heads fall into their hands when they hear, ” Sorry kids, the idols are gone now, you can all go home.”
Eventually, one of them turns and walks away, then slowly, one by one, the others follow.
